Leon Bridges Peaceful Place

from the Guardian

So, to the uninformed, Bridges’s detour down country roads on Leon could look like galloping after a runaway bandwagon. That would be untrue and unfair. Born in Atlanta, raised in Fort Worth, Bridges has this music in his marrow as much as soul or R&B. Over the years he’s earned some spurs, creating songs that could be called country to varying degree, in collaboration with fellow Texan icons like Kacey Musgraves and Miranda Lambert, as well as Khruangbin on the lovely Texas Sun.

Leon Bridges – Peaceful Place (Official Video)

who is he you ask?? Todd Michael “Leon” Bridges (born July 13, 1989) is an American singer, songwriter, and record producer. He signed with Columbia Records to release his debut studio album, Coming Home (2015), which peaked at number six on the Billboard 200, received platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and earned a nomination for Best R&B Album at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards.

Los Campesinos – kms

From Stereogum

In a couple of short weeks, Welsh indie-pop greats Los Campesinos! are set to return with All Hell, their first new album in seven years. We’ve already posted the early tracks “Feast Of Tongues,” “A Psychic Wound,” and “0898 HEARTACHE.” Now, we get to hear one last taste of the new LP before its arrival.

The latest Los Campesinos! track is called “kms,” and you already know what the title means. Kim Paisey sings lead on most of this track. It captures a specific sort of suburban boredom in all its widescreen majesty: “Scratchcard inside an envelope/ Little effort for fleeting fun/ I truly hope that both our luck is out/ I’d kill myself if he won.” Check it out below.

Really?? Welsh?

actually, they sound Welsh

Los Campesinos! – kms (Official Audio)

about them because i need this – Los Campesinos! are a seven-piece indie pop band from CardiffWales, formed in early 2006 at Cardiff University. The band has seen several lineup changes– lead vocalist Gareth David Paisey and guitarists Neil Turner and Tom Bromley are the only remaining original members, now joined by guitarist Rob Taylor, keyboardist Kim Paisey, bassist Matt Fidler and drummer Jason Adelinia.

Influenced by the twee pop movement, the band released their debut studio album, Hold on Now, Youngster…, in February 2008, and followed up with We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed, in October that year.[1] Both receiving favourable reviews by critics, the former was described by Pitchfork as a “giddy, tuneful love note to individuality, pathos – and everything else indie pop built its name on”.[2] Their third album, Romance Is Boring (2010), saw the band expanding their “already sizeable instrumental palette”.[3] Since then, Los Campesinos! have issued four more studio albums, with All Hell (2024) being their most recent release and highest charting album, to date.

In 2021, Pitchfork included Los Campesinos! among the 200 most important artists from the site’s first 25 years, and described the group as “the 21st century’s most endearing cult band.”[4]

Its a big band so I wanted to show them in person – this is a video from 7 years ago on KEXP

Seago – Downtown Guy

Seago – Downtown Guy (Visualizer)

I didn’t know this – Seago is from Brampton!

Seago, a.k.a. Jordan Kelman, hails from Brampton, Ontario. Currently based in Toronto, the twenty-eight-year-old cites Drake as his biggest influence; “Maybe that’s patriotism,” he jokes. Seago describes his sound as “a tad bit outlandish but still simple and pop sensible.” His desire to create music manifested when he listened to 808s and Heartbreak for the first time. “It was the first CD I ever got,” he added, “those melodies awakened something in me.” He began dabbling in music around ten years ago but started pursuing it seriously as a songwriter when he graduated college in 2019. “I was inspired by PARTYNEXTDOOR and tried to get my foot in the door through my writing,” he told me over Zoom. Seago released his first single, “LAWN,” in June 2022 and has quickly amassed 180,000 monthly listeners in under two years.

Lyrics:

She’s not over her downtown guy Asks if I’m up on the late night I’m into it, I don’t know why I took it as a bat sign And when she knows what she’s looking for tonight And when she knows, she’s outside

Shed Seven – Talk of the Town

Second article from The Guardian – my best source for really great music!

This is a great story

‘Absolutely mindblowing!’ Shed Seven score their second No 1 album of the year

Britpop band cement comeback by becoming only the 20th act to achieve two No 1 albums in a calendar year

Shed Seven have cemented one of the biggest chart comebacks in British rock, scoring their second UK No 1 album of the year – over two decades on from their Britpop heyday.

The band, who formed in York in 1990 and released their debut album in 1994, remain best known for hits such as Going For Gold and Chasing Rainbows, which channelled the increasingly symphonic style of Britpop in the wake of Oasis, Blur and Pulp’s mid-90s success

More here (Thanks Wikipedia)

They have achieved 15 Top 40 singles[1] and five Top 40 albums in the UK.[2] The band officially broke up in 2003, but reformed for a greatest-hits tour in July 2007.[1] Shed Seven continued to play shows around Britain periodically until releasing a new studio album in 2017 with the announcement of Instant Pleasures. Their latest album, A Matter of Time, was released on 5 January 2024 and became the first number one album in their career. Shed Seven released another album on 27th September of the same year, Liquid Gold, which went straight in at number one on the official UK album charts, giving them a second number one album of the year.

Joy Buzzer – “Jeanette” – Pleased to Meet You

Joy Buzzer is a wonderful New York power pop group.  The group formed in 2021 and have released several killer singles. Just last week they released their first full length album Pleased to Meet Me .  The cover is an obvious spoof of the The Replacements classic 80’s album Pleased to Meet Me.  Spot the difference!

Get ready for 2:30 of pure pop bliss!

Nervous Eaters – “Don’t Need to Make You Mine” – Rock N Roll Your Heart Away

The Nervous Eaters, have been around a long long time.  They are considered one of Boston’s original  punk rock bands. They released their first single “Loretta” way back in 1976.

Eons later Neko Case did a wonderful cover version.

After almost 50 years and half a dozen albums, the band is back with a brand new record.

It looks like The Nervous Eaters haven’t lost a step.

Jesse Malin/Butch Walker – “In the Modern World” – Silver Patron Saints

Butch Walker is an American musician, and record producer. He is mainly known as a producer for such diverse acts as Pink, Green Day, Avril Lavigne and Taylor Swift to name a few.  Walker contributes “In the Modern World” to the album Silver Patron Saints. This is a 3 record set set up to raise funds for stricken NY scenester and musician  Jesse Malin.

In 2023, Malin announced that he had suffered a rare spinal stroke on May 4, 2023, that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Due to extensive medical bills, his manager and various friends have set up a donation campaign to help him pay for his medical expenses.  One of the organizations that came to his aid is Sweet Relief. The Sweet Relief Musicians Fund provides financial assistance to all types of career musicians and music industry workers who are struggling to make ends meet while facing physical or mental health issues, disability, or age-related problems.

All the songs on this tribute album were written by Malin.  Walker tackles the song In the Modern World.

Redd Kross – “I’ll Take Your Word for It” – s/t

Redd Kross is a pop punk band from California.  Like The Nervous Eaters, they can have kicking around off and on since the late 70’s. The band was started by brothers Jeff and Steve McDonald while Steve was still in public school. This Pitchfork review of their latest release, neatly sums up their legendary career and brings us up to date on their latest release.

2024 is shaping up to being a big year for Red Kross with the new record, a biography and a documentary film all being released. Here’s the latest single

Apropos of something, Japanese gals Shonen Knife even have a tribute song about the band!
