Bria Salmena – The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore (Official Video)

I don’t know how I found this song, but Bria Salmena has a beautiful voice.
A bit I picked up
… Salmena became a revered artist who has covered a lot of ground over a relatively brief time period. Whether she’s putting out an album like 2018’s widely lauded Basic Behaviour with her frenetic post-punk band FRIGS or playing with alt-country icon Orville Peck, Toronto has been the centre of her musical universe, as it has for her long-time collaborator Duncan Hay-Jennings
I think she is best know for working with Orville Peck
Bria Salmena is a Canadian singer and guitarist, member of the Canadian indie rock band Frigs.
Since 2019, Salmena and Frigs’ members Kris Bowering, and Duncan Hay Jennings, along with Toronto bassist Kyle Connolly, have been members of Orville Peck‘s touring band.
Salmena is one of Peck’s close friends. She has worked for Peck as a background singer and musician for many of his songs. She is also featured on “All I Can Say”, from Bronco.
Frigs, her band had an album Basic Behaviour was long listed for the Polaris in 2018
Yeule – Tequila Coma
I learned about Yeule from the John Mulaney show
see
pretty amazing bio from Wikipedia

This is a really interesting bump up for Yeule from NPR All Songs Considered. This episode featured this playlist:
Featured artists and songs:
01. Everything Is Recorded: “Never Felt Better (feat. Sampha, Florence + The Machine),” from Temporary
02. Yeule: “Skullcrusher,” from Evangelic Girls Is A Gun

I really have to listen to this
what they say about Yeule
We’ve got just what you need for that stubborn case of existential dread in a looming dystopia as we update our running list of the year’s best songs. This includes the scorched-Earth beauty in yeule’s “Skullcrusher;”
I’m with Her, Sarah Jarosz, Aoife O’Donovan, Sarah Watkins – Ancient Light
a good review of the band that has been around since 2014 (on and off). We have played Sarah Jarosz before, but not the other members of the band. They have a new album out (May 9th) and the some we chose is getting play. Great voices great harmonies.
Also, they were Artist of the Month in the Blue Grass Situation. Here is a bit of the write-up:
The three multi-instrumentalists and songwriters are beloved in folk and bluegrass circles and known cumulatively for a treasure trove of work as solo artists, in ensembles, and as co-writers and producers. Internationally renowned live performers, they were most recently celebrated under their collaborative moniker as part of the 62nd GRAMMY Awards, when their original single, “Call My Name,” was awarded Best American Roots Song. This accolade alone showed just how creatively in sync these women continued to be, even as time marched forward and each turned their focuses toward individual projects and significant personal life changes – marriage, next generations, moving homes, passing on of family – all while discerning unique perspectives about the broader transformations of society around them.

Robert Forster – Tell it back to Me
Harkening back (again) to the old times. Robert Forster, one of the GoBetweens gets a great review for his new album:
While his last record was laced with references or allusions to his wife’s cancer battle, this new Robert Forster offering is all sunshine and roses. Well, not exactly. The half of the best songwriting partnership since Lennon & McCartney sounds as invigorated as he can be here on Strawberries, his new album. Dare I say that he even sounds like his late partner in the Go-Betweens, Grant McLennan?
He was born in 1957, so good on him for keeping it going!!
A good review from an interesting site
Strawberries works best when Robert Forster sounds like he just isn’t belaboring any idea for too long. The title cut and “All of the Time” sound like numbers he just wrote and recorded in the same day. I mean that in the best possible way. There’s something liberating here in hearing a guy who’s been one of the most literate (for lack of a better word) songwriters just cut loose a little. The spontaneity of portions of Strawberries is what makes this a highly recommended record. Of course, Robert Forster is always worth listening to, so there’s that too.
The album was released in late May of this year.
Here is a good bio of Forster and the Go-Betweens
There is no music video for Tell it back to me, but you will remember this one
The Go-Betweens – Streets of your town
a nice comment for a song that still sounds great
This song is the sound of Brisbane on a summers afternoon in the 1980s. Heat rising all day and then the afternoon storm would roll in, with the rain cooling things off. Sat on the decks of old Queenslanders in Paddington listening to this on those very same afternoons. We never knew what we had back then.
Their songs are lovely. Here is a concert from 2005 featuring Grant McLennan, who died of a heart attack less than a year later.
The Go-Betweens – Live at The Tivoli, Brisbane (August 6, 2005)
Here they play Clouds (second song) – you can hear a 1988 recording of the same song here
a great band
Turnstile – “Light Design” – Never Enough
Turnstile is an American band from Baltimore, formed in 2010. They have released five EPs and four studio albums. They have earned three Grammy nominations. Apparently little kids love Turnstile!

The track Light Design is taken from the recently released Never Enough album.
Pitchfork describes Turnstile as the biggest band in hard-core. https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/turnstile-never-enough/
Although I wouldn’t classify Light Design as hard-core punk, it is mighty fine. Someone took the time to dig deep into the song.

Dear Rouge – “Cutting Teeth” – Lonesome High
Dear Rouge are a Juno award-winning Vancouver band formed in 2012 by married couple Drew and Danielle McTaggart. In the last 13 years they have released 6 full length albums. The name of the duo is derived from the name of Danielle’s home town, Red Deer, Alberta, “dear” being a homophone of deer and “rouge” meaning red in French. Their last album came out almost a year ago. https://readrange.com/dear-rouge-lonesome-high-interview/
Cutting Teeth is a standout track.
Sloan – “Live Forever” – Based on the Best Seller
What can one say about Sloan? One of my favourite Canadian groups have been consistently putting out wonderful music since the early 90’s. They are releasing their 14th album in September. Live Forever is a preview track.
Kneecap- “The Recap” – Fine Art
Kneecap are an Irish hip hop trio from Belfast. They are, I bet, the most controversial act we have featured on the show. According to Wikipedia, “The group has been at the centre of public debates about free speech and the expression of political opinions within Ireland and the UK. Their themes focus on working class Belfast youth culture, Irish republicanism and Irish language rights. In concert, they have made statements supporting Palestinian nationalism. Their name is derived from the extralegal punishment attacks meted out by Northern Ireland paramilitary groups.” Surprisingly NPR and the BBC can enlighten us.
The chosen track , The Recap gives you a good idea of their sound.

Lewis Capaldi – “Survive” – single
Lewis Capaldi is a Scottish singer-songwriter and musician. I must have not got he message but in 2019, his single “Someone You Loved” was the number one song in both the UK and the US. In May 2020, it was announced that Capaldi’s song had become the longest-running top 10 UK single of all time by a British artist.
Unfortunately, Capaldi lost his voice while performing at the Glastonbury Festival in 2023. He experienced Tourette’s Syndrome tics and had to stop his performance and cancel a tour. After 2 years of therapy, he triumphantly returned to the stage.
His new release, appropriately is called Survive.
