Love this song, what a great voice

a little about Tami Neilson from Outside Music

Canadian-born, New Zealand-based and Willie Nelson approved!

Tami Neilson’s worldwide appeal is due in no small part to her reputation, according to Rolling Stone, as “a fire breathing belter.” Neilson’s ground-shaking voice has wowed audiences across the globe and racked up numerous awards along the way.

In New Zealand, she is one of her adopted home country’s most beloved artists. Her albums top the charts and her discography populates a combination of categories almost every year at the NZ Music Awards. Her latest sold-out tour culminated in a live album backed by the 80-piece Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra.

Neilson has built an audience of all ages in her native North America thanks to appearances like the star-studded PBS concert special celebrating the music of Patsy Cline filmed live at the Ryman in Nashville, performing the theme song and writing music for the latest Spongebob Squarepants movie Saving Bikini Bottom, as well as making cameo appearances in the hit TV series “The Brokenwood Mysteries”.

Counting American icon Willie Nelson as a fan and friend, Neilson duetted alongside Nelson for their award-winning song “Beyond the Stars” for her 2022 album Kingmaker and later joined in the celebration of his 90th birthday at the Hollywood Bowl. The embrace of Neilson by American musical institutions also includes fulfilling a lifelong dream of making her debut on the Grand Ole Opry in 2024

she also collaborates with Willie nelson.

Adam Baldwin – Lighthouse in Little Lorraine

This will be a long one to play – over 6 minutes. The song really goes with the video and I wonder if they are going to make this into a movie?

Interesting who plays Uncle Huey – Uncle Huey: Greg Thomey

a great story based on another story

and this is going to be a real movie, unfortunately, not with Greg Thomey

Interesting, the CBC story that talks about the movie – coming out this fall doesn’t even mention Adam Baldwin

Nova Scotia’s Andy Hines lands J Balvin for film adaptation of his own music video

Grammy-nominated Canadian music video creator Andy Hines says he hopes his feature film directorial debut could be the first of several music videos adapted into big-screen stories.

The Nova Scotia filmmaker recently wrapped production on Little Lorraine, which marks the first cinematic role for Colombian reggaeton star J Balvin. The idea, Hines said, was borne from inspiration to make a great song into a movie.

“Songwriters are some of the greatest storytellers,” he told The Canadian Press in an interview Friday.

However…Sean Patrick, who once played Sam in Lord of the Rings is in the movie!!

    Sean Astin: Father Williams

    Born Ruffians – Athena

Here is a good headline for this song

Born Ruffians Enter the Greek Mythology Chatroom on New-Wavey Single “Athena”

The Canadian indie rockers’ ninth studio album, Beauty’s Pride, will drop June 6 on Yep Roc.

After a period of prolificity early in the decade—releasing their Juice/Squeeze/Pulp trilogy of LPs over the course of 2020 and 2021—Ontario’s Born Ruffians are returning this summer with their ninth studio album, Beauty’s Pride. An experiment in synthier sounds, the project was recently teased with an early single dipping into sci-fi lyrical territory, while the latest cut from the record, “Athena,” sees Luke Lalonde employing a staccato vocal delivery recalling the early new wave scene as his band’s jaunty post-punk hews closer to revivalist indie-rock peers like Vundabar.

Born Ruffians – Athena (Lyric Visualizer)

    Mia Kelly – Rideau tombe

just really like this person’s voice

    Rideau tombe

Mia Kelly is from Gatineau (new to me-again)

    from Americana UK (really??)

To Be Clear’ is C’est le fun! (“it’s awesome” in French Canadian)

Sometimes, it all comes together. As is the case for Mia Kelly’s second album, ‘To Be Clear’. The lyrics are poetic and tell a good story. The sounds of the words are echoed in the music. The instruments accentuate the vocals. The vocals deliver the emotion and the meaning of the lyrics.

Kelly is gaining recognition for her prodigious talent. She was awarded Young Performer of the Year and Emerging Artist of the Year at the 2024 Canadian Folk Music Awards. For this album, she worked with the same producer as her debut – fellow songwriter Jim Bryson (The Tragically Hip, Kathleen Edwards) which was again recorded at his Fixed Hinge Studio in Ontario, Canada. Kelly and Bryson handled most of the instrumentation and recruited  Dani Nash (Drums; Sarah Harmer, July Talk), Olivier Fairfield (Drums; Patrick Watson, Leif Vollebekk) Brian Sanderson (Horns; Esmerine), Nick Loyer, and Allysann Foehring (BV) to round things out.

and they write about Rideau tombe

It comes through in songs on topics as tough as the domestic abuse Kelly sings about in ‘Rideau Tombe’, the second French song on the album.

Here is a video of her singing which is not a visualizer

Mia Kelly – Watercolour Girl (Official Music Video)

I also found Mia Kelly on a Mixcloud show – The International Americana Music Show – a show of Americana music made by non-American musicians

    Pierre Kwenders – Papa Wemba

about time that we played some more Peter Kwenders

Pierre Kwenders – PAPA WEMBA (Official Video)

and he is on KEXP – no surprise

Peter Kwenders also shows up in a 2022 Pitchfork article

Pierre Kwenders—the Congolese-born and Montreal-based musician and songwriter—has announced a new album. José Louis and the Paradox of Love is out April 29 via Arts & Crafts. It follows 2017’s Makanda at the End of Space, the Beginning of Time and it features contributions from Win Butler of Arcade Fire, Anaiis, King Britt, Ngabo, Sônge, and others. Watch the Daniel Amoakoh–directed video for the new song “Papa Wemba” above.

“He’s been called the king of Congolese Rumba, Papa Wemba has also been one of my idols and biggest inspirations,” Kwenders said in a statement. “He has paved the way for so many artists and has brought Congolese Rumba to another extent. His passing in 2016 was devastating for all rumba lovers. I knew from that day that I wanted to pay homage to him.”

I forgot he won the Polaris Prize in 2022

    Wet  Leg – CPR

Perennial Old Fellas favourites Wet Leg are back with a sophomore album.  Moisturizer  was released to critical acclaim, the album debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart.  Blog fave Burning Wood thinks they avoided the sophomore slump.

The NME also loves the new album. https://burnwoodtonite.blogspot.com/2025/07/wetter-better-legs.html

Here are two versions of the selected track.  The official video

and a live version in front of a huge audience at Glastonbury in June.

Clothes Line From Hell – Capital C – single

Clothesline From Hell, is basically Toronto-based singer/songwriter Adam LaFramboise.

According to Killbeat Music, “This song offers a captivating blend of moody lo-fi alternate-pop, showcasing LaFramboise’s unique ability to create atmospheric and introspective soundscapes.”

Last year, he also released his first ep.

Chris Stamey –  “I’d be Lost Without You”  – Anything Is Possible

Chris Stamey  is a veteran American musician.  He has played in or with Alex Chilton, The Sneakers, and the dB’s.  He’s been making music since the late 1970’s.  For example here is the classic 1977 single Summer Sun.

Here a nice little video re. the Sneakers’ sole release https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BB_enNNV13g  Sneaker member Mitch Easter would go on to produce REM.

Stamey is back in 2025 with a pretty good solo album. https://popdose.com/album-review-chris-stamey-anything-is-possible/

I’d be Lost Without You is a great track reminiscent of Pet Sounds era Beach Boys.  He is ably backed with harmonies from The Lemon Twigs.

Great Lake Swimmers   – “One More Dance Around the Sun” –  Caught Light

Great Lake Swimmers are a veteran folk rock band that has been kicking around for nearly over 20 years.  They first came to my attention with the 2009 release Lost Channels.  It was shortlisted for the 2009 Polaris Music Prize, and was nominated for a Juno Award.   Since then we  kinda lost track with one another, until lo and behold I discovered their new song  One More Dance Around the Sun.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBulngjpfLM&t=1s

The new album comes out in October.  https://exclaim.ca/music/article/great-lake-swimmers-ready-new-album-caught-light-share-title-track
